Geocaching is for really cool people P.E.R.I.O.D.
Nov. 3, 2020 1:29 pm

I recently went on a Geocaching hunt in Marinette County. I was doing research for small article on what Geocaching was, so I decided it would be best just to go out and do it. Roughly, there are around 250 caches here if my calculations were correct and I think I'm hooked.

My first thoughts on Geocaching: Ugggh, I don't know how to do it. I don't have a GPS. I don't know how to use a gridded map. I am not good with coordinates. My last thought of what kept me pushing forward was the thought of actually finding a hidden treasure! So dramatic, I know.

I am telling you my steps in order of importance, yours may be different. I don't know, I don't know how your brain works. Type A or type B? Personally type A over here for Awwwwesome!

Step One: Download an app called "GEOCACHING" Seriously folks, it was that easy.

Step Two: If I remember correctly I had to create an account. It was either with my email or facebook account. The best thing was they didn't even ask me for my blood type. Some registrations are far too in depth, but this app just got straight to the point.

Step Three: Goooooooo!

Other steps you find may be helpful.

  1. Gas up your car.
  2. Locate your car.
  3. Call a buddy to go with you, adventures are better with other people.
  4. Bring a snack or two.
  5. Have a pencil/pen to sign your name.
Wear shoes that can get muddy, you never know where your feet might take you that is in the direct opposite of where the actual Geocache is located.

Now what is a geocache? A geocache is basically just a fancy name for a treasure. Something hidden in plain site that someone wants you to find, but then put back as you found it. The ones that I found were called micro caches, meaning small. There were some I didn't have time for that could be in a treasure box, or a coffee can, or hidden under a fixed object. But what each geocache has is a clue or two. Click your finger on the cache in the map on your app (wordy, I know) and it will lead you in the right direction. We all know Siri doesn't lie with directions right?

My first find was awesome. It took us a while to find it and of course, just as I tapped out, I looked for about 10 more seconds and yelled "I found it!" My buddy and I had walked past it at least two times.

The second one was equally as cool, with the same tap out, only to look for a little longer and find it again. I won't tell you where or what, but I found it, so that makes me really cool.

So after you find it, you sign your name on a little sheet of paper about the size of paper that a troll would write on and date it. You can see the others that have come before and made it out alive as well, then you mark it in your account on your app. I can't explain much more, you just have to go and try to find one.

Easy peasy. I rate this form of entertainment E for easy and exciting. Also C for clueless, because you do look silly looking around trees and around signs in the middle of nowhere. We had a dump truck pull up next to us asking if we needed assistance. One of the caches (which we did not find that day) was hidden at a cross roads of two roads on a gravel road in the middle of Egypt. I think the man asked "mam, do you need help with something." I replied that we were geocaching as I flicked my hair back and winked. Pretty sure he had no idea what I said and just nodded and waved. Thinking about it now, I should have said, "yes we are looking for a geocache and I need you fellas to take a few minutes and help us find it." Rookie mistake.

Marinette County Snowmobile Trail Report - January 15, 2019
Jan. 15, 2019 4:34 pm

DUN-GOOD RIDERS: The trails are open & groomed & in excellent condition. Snow covered ice base. Lots of happy riders this past week.   Trails are in really nice riding condition , not that it wouldn't be nice for the snow gods to give us 4 or 5 inches but trails are still really good. Trails are open for snowmobiles and winter atv/utv use.  Use caution around Kidd Lake, lots of logging in that area.

NEAR NORTH: North and West trails have been groomed and are in early season condition. The South and West trails have been panned. Trails groomed up to the swamps. The bottom line is we just need more snow for the trails and cold and freezing temperatures to freeze the swamps There is not much snow to work, with doing the best with what we have. Trails open for ATV's were allowed watch for signs.

PEMENEE RIVER RIDERS: : All of our trails are open and being groomed. I would rate our trail conditions as good. Most of the trails are open for atv's & utv's, but not all so follow the signs.

RANGER CITY RIDERS (snowmobile only): Our trails survived the busy weekend and  are open with fair/good riding conditions. We have been out grooming/panning over the last week and beginning of this week and hope to have our full trail system groomed for the weekend.  With the colder temps ahead it will allow us to groom across our swamp areas. There are some thin and icy areas thought the system and we could use some more snow so please ride with caution.

PLEASE NOTE LOGGING OPERATIONS: Our north end of the East Trail between Marek Road and Forest Road 404 is currently being logged and we are advising using caution through this area. This area is extremely icy and should ride with caution.

IRON SNOW SHOE: Trail Conditions: Early Season.  Snow Cover: 4 to 5 inches in most areas.
Date of Report: January 14, 2019
Area Report:  We had a great weekend.  Lot of people riding.  Great to see you all out there.  Most people were surprised at how good the trails actually were.  It's that good flat ice base that is basically keeping everything smooth.  We were able to put on over 250 miles throughout the weekend...leaving from Crooked Lake.  Conditions really have not changed.  Trails north of Hwy C and western part of the system and down toward Crooked Lake seem to have the most snow on them.  The mid section in the Twin Bridge Area, still has a hard snow base also.  There is less snow, but it is rideable.  The Newton Lake area remains the same with good riding there.  The southeastern corner has the least amount of snow.  There is a plowed field there, so not much can be done with it.  The groomers were all out yesterday again throughout the entire trail system.  Just an effort to make the trails nice with almost nothing to work with. WE NEED SNOW!!! Winter ATV/UTV use is allowed in some areas. Check with the club for more info on where that's allowed.

Marinette County Trail Update January 8, 2019
Jan. 8, 2019 5:37 pm

Marinette County trails are open! 5 out of the 7 County  clubs are open and grooming and reporting good early season riding. The River Road Riders (Marinette City area) and the Kumalong club (in the Coleman area) are the only trails that are closed. They got less snow and more rain.

PEMENEE RIVER RIDERS: Trails are open and we're grooming this week. Got a good 7" of snow and some rain but that didn't ruin the trails. Colder temps are coming and possibly more snow too. Winter atv/utv use is allowed on most of our trail system. Follow the signs!

NEAR NORTH TRAIL RIDERS OF ATHELSTANE: Finally the snow Gods have graced us with snow. Here in the Athelstane area we received about 5 inches of heavy packing snow. Some settling with the rain yesterday afternoon, The groomers are out today and should have all trails groomed by this afternoon. With the cold temperatures there should now be a good base. Trails open to ATV's and UTV's where allowed.  Use caution in the swampy area on the trail going through the Amberg Wildlife area. This short section is not being groomed yet. The swamp is not frozen solid enough to take the groomer through but it is passable for snowmobiles.

DUN-GOOD RIDERS: Trails are open. We got about 7"-8" of snow mixed with some rain. Snow cover is still good. Trials are being groomed regularly. All trails are groomed and in GREAT shape. We got a good 8 inches of snow and possibly another inch or two coming on Fri . Thank you snow gods!! USE CAUTION: There is a lot of logging around Kidd Lake. Winter atv/utv use is allowed.

IRON SNOW SHOE: Hurrah!  We received 6 inches of good heavy wet snow throughout most of the Iron Snowshoe Trail.  Now it is Monday morning and it is raining, but I think we will still be ok.  We went around and opened all the gates.  The trails are OPEN.  We welcome any of you to ride through and pack this snow down with your sleds.  This will help the snow stick to the trail.  For best results, our groomers will not be able to go out until it stops raining and the temperatures stay colder.  So...a day or two out.

RANGER CITY RIDERS:  Trails are open with early riding conditions we received about 7" of wet snow Monday. Our system has not been groomed yet due to some areas with swamps that need to freeze but are passable with sleds. We encourage everyone to ride and pack the trails down. We will look at the end of the week to see if it was cold enough to freeze to get groomer through at the end of the week and are hoping to pan some of the trails by the weekend. PLEASE NOTE LOGGING OPERATIONS: Our north end of the East Trail between Marek Road and Forest Road 404 is currently being logged and we are advising using caution through this area. There may be bare areas with the recent weather. We will do our best to keep this section passable as long as we can.

KUMALONG: Thought we were going to have some good snow (then it rained) Trails remain CLOSED
.
RIVER ROAD RIDERS: Our area got mostly rain, very little snow. Trails remain CLOSED.

CLUB EVENTS:

Marinette County Trail Report week of December 11, 2018
Dec. 12, 2018 4:08 pm

MARINETTE COUNTY TRAIL REPORT

PEMENEE RIVER RIDERS: Pembine/Niagara-Beecher: Our trails to the west toward Dunbar are being groomed. We need some more snow before we groom to the east. We are working on opening gates yet on our trail to Norway. I would rate our trails as poor for snowmobiling due to lack of snow.

DUN-GOOD RIDERS: Dunbar/Goodman: No new snow. Poor conditions for snowmobiles. Open for ATV's & UTV's.

RANGER CITY RIDERS Amberg/Wausaukee: Our trails are still closed due to lack of snow and a few spots with open water. We were out this weekend preparing for opening and need another decent snowfall and a few more days of cold temps to freeze a few more wet areas.

NEAR NORTH Athelstane: 12/11/18---NEAR NORTH TRAIL RIDERS OF ATHELSTANE: (Snowmobile & ATV-UTV Trails) Snowmobiling is not recommended. Base is thin, some sections are closed due to wet conditions in the swamps, no grooming at this time. Our atv-utv trails are open all year round except for the one month in the Spring when the county closes them. The trails are not yet panned or groomed. The tracks were installed on the tractor Saturday after our meeting. With this is done, we are good to go.

RIVER ROAD RIDERS Marinette/Wausaukee: Trails are closed.

KUMALONG SNO-RIDERS Coleman/Crivitz/Peshtigo: Kumalong's trails remain closed because lack of snow

IRON SNOW SHOE RECREATIONAL TRAILS High Falls Flowage/Peshtigo River/Silver Cliff: Trails are still closed-- except north of Hwy C where they are open for ATV's & UTV's ONLY. The cold weather has helped with our base and also freezing up the lakes.  It is still not enough.  We need snow and more cold weather. There will be a new trail along Cty X between Wildwood Lane and the bridge. This should be done by the end of this week. More maintenance is being done.  There is so much work done long before the snow even comes.  The brushing crews have already been out in an effort to get rid of any fallen trees.  We also have a brusher hooked on to one of the tractors that has been out to clear away the smaller stuff.  There will be a new trail along Cty X between Wildwood Lane and the bridge.  This should be done by the end of this week. We all need to do the snow dance!!!
