I thought I might share with you and your readers a little gem of a trail I discovered recently in northeastern Wisconsin.

About four miles east of Crivitz and a mile or so east of Lake Noquebay on right of Way Woad, the Lake Noquebay Trail System comprises four or five loops totaling probably 10 to 12 miles. The course is almost entirely wooded - about equal evergreens and deciduous - with a number of gentle hills. It's ideal for classic cross country skiing but too narrow for skating. In addition to skiing, the trail signage indicates that hikers, mountain bikers and snowshoers are welcome; a perfect venue for a silent sports type.

Best of all, it's peaceful. In a two-hour hike on a recent weekday, I encountered a couple grouse, some other song birds and two deer, but no other humans. The road traffic on Right of Way Road is minimal. You can access it either from the south off of County Road GG or from the north off of County Road X.

Thunder Mountain Trails

Thunder Mountain County Park is the highest point in Marinette County and provides breathtaking views and scenic trails. The trails are well-maintained and excellent for hiking. Signs are posted at each intersection to provide navigation in this remote park. A new picnic area and restroom facility is available. Follow County Road W west out of Crivitz for 14 miles, Turn right onto Caldron Falls Road, and then turn left onto Thunder Mountain Road. Follow Thunder Mountain Road until it dead ends. Map

Long Slide Walking Trails – (6.5 Miles)

The Long Slide Trail System was developed as part of the County Forest Wildlife Habitat Program. It is a system of old logging roads and wildlife openings which are closed to vehicular travel. Featuring beautiful rock outcroppings visible from the trails, this system also has a lowland cedar swamp along the eastern border of the system. Enter at Long Slide Road, Heller Road or Thompson east directly off Highway 141.

Lake Mary Walking Trails – (2.75 Miles)

The Lake Mary Trail is a loop that is located in the smaller block of county forest northeast of Lake Noquebay. It runs through an aspen forest which is completely surrounded by a lowland cedar swamp. Around the loop there are numerous open grassy areas that are maintained for wildlife. Enter off Right of Way Road just south of Highway X (six miles west of Highway 180)

Lake Noquebay Trails – (5 Miles)

The western edge of this trail system borders the Lake Noquebay Wildlife Area. With hills, lowland and marsh areas, the Lake Noquebay Trail System can provide several difficulty levels for even the most ambitious hiker. Enter off Right of Way Road just south of Highway X (six miles west of Highway 180). Map

Peshtigo River Trails – (9 Miles)

Also part of the County Forest Wildlife Habitat Program, the Peshtigo River Trails are intended to provide a serene area to hike, observe nature, wildlife and hunt. Directly west of Goodman Park in Northwestern Marinette County this system totals almost 9 miles. It winds through a mix of aspen and hardwoods with a few areas of lowland swamp. Take Benson Lake Road to Swede John Road. Enter on Forest Road 1512.

Hemlock Curve Nature Trail – (2.4 Miles)

This trail is perfect for families and is part of the Peshtigo Harbor Wildlife Area Trails Project. The Frog Slough Loop is approximately 1.1miles in length and Deer Trail Loop is slightly smaller at 1 mile. The trail leads you through the forest beside the scenic Peshtigo River and past a grove of hemlocks. There is a trail guide available at the trail head so you can also learn about the many natural and historic features of this area. The trail map guides you to the sites of interest along the path. Take Highway 141 into Peshtigo. Turn south on West Front Street (a.k.a. Hale Road). Turn left onto Harbor Road and left onto Badger Road. Map

Morgan Park Walking Trails - (2.5 Miles)

Take a hike around beautiful Timm’s Lake and view the breathtaking scenery or watch the ducks and loons swim in Loon Bay. The trails wind around a portion of the lake and up onto the bluffs overlooking Morgan County Park and Timm’s Lake. A moderate hike, but well worth the scenic beauty. Enter on Morgan Park Road from Highway 141.

Riverside Park Trail System - Niagara (5.5 Miles)

Spend some time in our series of trails following the banks of the Menominee River. Located in the city of Niagara, meaning “thundering waters”, these trails feature bluff views and the wooded beauty of all four seasons. Located on the northern end of the City of Niagara, you can access these walking trails from Highway 141. Take Washington Avenue east about 1/2 mile to Tyler Road. Turn left at the 4-way stop. There are three trail heads along the east side of Tyler Road with parking. Take time to hike, bike, cross country ski, or snowshoe in this pristine area. Enjoy the wooded beauty of the seasons along these trails from the upper ridges overlooking the Menominee river Valley or down along the river and wetlands. Map

Governor Thompson State Park – (16 Miles)

This state park consists of over 2800 acres on the Caldron Falls Flowage. Head off the beaten path to find the picturesque granite outcroppings, birds and animals of the area. Follow the signs from Highway 141 north of Crivitz. Map

Peshtigo River State Forest

The Forest is comprised of various loops that provide a variety of distances. Offering extremely steep hills, breathtaking views of the river and quiet serenity except for the rush of the Peshtigo River. Follow the signs from Highway 141 north of Crivitz. Map

Located in the City of Marinette on the shores of Green Bay, Red Arrow Park has picnic and play areas and a sand beach to compliment the nature trails.
